Warrington 3rd 48 v 17 Whitchurch 3rd

On a balmy October day, on the sun drenched Costa del Walton, both sides turned on a sparkling display of open running rugby, which produced no fewer than eleven tries.

. The visitors were first on the board when Will Roberts seized on a loose ball near the line to go under the posts. Jones converted, Warrington were stung into action, and replied shortly afterwards with a try by Nicholson, following a strong burst out of defence by Dan Griffiths. Griffiths slotted over the first of his four conversions of the afternoon. Both Griffiths and full back Morris were prominent throughout the first half with their powerful running, and before half time, this had brought about further tries to Flint, Higham and Mick Mullen to give the home side a healthy 24-7 lead.

When Morris powered his way over the line, early in the second half, and Mullen scored his second try following one of his typical weaving runs, it looked as if a real drubbing was on the cards for the visitors. To their credit, they continued to play open attacking rugby, and were rewarded with two tries of their own by Dawson, who soared through a gap in the home defence, and Downs, who crossed in the corner after some slick handling along the back line.

Such was the quality of this game, that many spectators stayed to watch instead of turning their attention to the game in Marseille, and were rewarded when Wright crosed in the corner. The best was saved until last, however. Following a spell of intense Whitchurch pressure, the Wire broke out of defence, and after some wonderful handling, by at least half the side, Griffiths sold an ourageous dummy to waltz in under the posts, to seal their second win of the season.
