Sandbach travelled up the Wirral for a game on paper that should have be won by a greater margin than the final result shows. An early kick off was arranged to enable everyone to get back for the International, however things didn’t go exactly to plan when a couple of the cars decided to take a short cut through the Mersey Tunnel! Nevertheless, as we had 15 players we kicked off on time, with the stragglers coming on later.
The first half saw Sandbach in a dominant position scoring two tries after charging runs from Tom Walley who had an excellent first half. Had we kicked all our goals the match would have been over by half time, but as it was there was still a lot of work to be done in the second half.
In the second half Sandbach, despite the one well taken try scored by Billy Rees, Sandbach could not get out of first gear and allowed Oldershaw to come back into the game by taking us on up front and spoiling round the side of the rucks and mauls. Having said that credit must be given for the defensive effort put in during the last 10 minutes to stop Oldershaw crossing the line.
Overall any win a long way from home is satisfactory, but if we are going to be serious about gaining promotion this season, we need to step up to the mark playing a full 80 minutes of committed rugby.
Tries : Tom Walley, Lee Wardle, Billy Rees , Conversions : Chris Greenhalgh (2)
