Vale of Lune 4th XV 18 v 14 Upper Eden 2nd XV
A full programme of Rugby at last. Upper Eden were welcome visitors to Powderhouse Lane. The Vale side were at full strength and although lingering in the lower reaches of Division 3 North in recent weeks they had been playing some good rugby.
Upper Eden were travelling on the back of a home defeat by Hutton 2s the previous week. Paul Antcliffe and Dave Harrison had prepared their side in readiness for a re-bound by the Upper Eden side after this home defeat.
Upper Eden arrived early and warmed up intensively to prepare for the game. Vale with the long break had all their injured now available looked a useful side on paper. Under the authority of Referee Tony Holt the game kicked off on what was a dull, damp Saturday afternoon. Actually conditions were perfect.

Vale pressed from the off and soon registered a score after some strong direct forward play. This was the trend in the first half and the score increased to the half with the turn round arriving and the Vale leading 18 points to 0 points and looking comfortable.

What had been said in the Upper Eden ranks at the half time interval. From they start of the 2nd half they were taking the game to the Vale side and began to eat into the points advantage Vale had held.
A tense game was in progress as Upper Eden moved their score to 14 points, a try would win the game. Vale are made of much sterner stuff nowadays and after the obvious relaxation in endeavour after the half time interval they re-gathered and held this good Upper Eden side out to the final whistle.
This is the type of Rugby we are getting used to in the Leagues this season, all games generally are competitive and the standard of rugby being played at these levels is clearly improving season on season.
